Regarding Oumuamua, the credit should really go to Artur Clarke. For details, refer to his famous "Rendezvous with Rama" novel from 1975. Rama II and Rama III are not that good, but Rama I is excellent. It was the Clarke who was the first to describe a 10 km worldship in details. Regarding disintegration of comets, I pouint out that neither Napier et al, not Tusk et al. seem to be aware or to acknowledge the Richardson et al 1998 paper from Icarus :"Tidal distortion and disruption of Earth-crossing asteroids". It says 'asteroids', but comets apply equally well. This is a must read for all of you. If you have read it, you would have been forced to abandon your obsession with the Taurids as the cause of the YD event, but that is not an option for you, isn't it ? So much for falsifiability. Regarding the YD event, the impactor was in ~11 years period orbit, which is clearly discernible from the Petaev's data on Pt in ice cores. This too rules out Taurids, for they are in a much shorter orbit.
Chandra and Fred were good friends of Clarke. A little appreciated but profound fact.
Thanks for sharing this, Mr. Howard. some of us who dwell in the population called the Public feel distinctly ill-served by the once-vaunted institutions. The Ivies still have influence, but it’s mainly financial clout. They remind me of JAL flight 123, the ten-year-old 747 with 18,000 decompression/landing cycles and a bad repair that blew off the rudder in flight and severed all hydraulics. The aircraft continued flying for almost a full hour before crashing. As a culture, the West seems to be cruising rudderless now, staying aloft only from it’s own inertia.
Harvard is where the experts come from, right? Nowadays, when I hear something from an expert, I like to get a second opinion from someone who really knows.
