Congratulations. Impact features in India are not well known elsewhere, and their relation to the development of Indian religion has not been examined in depth previously. I wonder what the Indian reaction will be?

I guess you had an email from Leroy. He sent the same to me. Actually, we had a post on this at the SIS web site a few months ago when the author of the book/ study contacted us directly. Anyone wish to comment on the author's explanation of Soma?

You might be on to something here but does it have to be a toxic substance? Mike Baillie in his book, New Light on the Black Death, as well as various articles on the AD540 event, thought that comets could result in clouds of noxious gases. If so, why would it be venerated, as Soma? Why not a substance that provided a welcome nice taste or something that was involved in mind altering incidents - a sort of heavenly alcohol. There is of course the possibility that comets and meteors produced an ionisation of the atmosphere and that mind altering substances were sought out to re-enact that experience - which is where Soma with an origin in plants or fungi might come in. However, in the Veda book, above, Soma is actually prepared and its preparation is apparently described. Another thing to bear in mind is that if the Taurid complex had resulted in a number of incidents going back into the Pleistocene the idea of mind altering plants and fungi could have developed within the Paleolithic and was reinforced with each subsequent event. Its a bit of an anomaly, not just as far as conventional attitudes are concerned but the whole idea of catastrophic encounters. The peculiar thing is that Godbole says that a small electric charge was part of the preparation - why might this be? The book is actually very dense with lots of information to digest.

Hello Carol and all Yes, it is an excellent book, it is good to make us think. Yes, I also believe that the megafauna fossils found in palaeolagoons (I'm investigating), were poisoned by substances of meteoritic process. They did not die of thirst, as many researchers believe. http://sites.google.com/site/cosmopier/impact-craters/end-pleistocene-palaeolagoons It is really hard to say, but many substances are toxic, depending on the dose, they are poisons. They can kill, can cripple, can also cause hallucinogenic effects, not necessarily poisonous. Depending on the quantity, they can go crazy once the user. These are some of the effects of drugs (toxic) from long use, alcohol included. Drugs (toxic) are bad ones, for all its users thus probably are not, at least in the short term option, say. The drugs taste is not important to the user, but the effects. I do not put a matter of choice but of possibility. The discussion is not a matter of choice only. I am not advocating anything, is a hypothetical question. But the question is: Could some toxic substances during the meteorite process be synthesized and polluted soils, waters, rocks, and cause (drugs) hallucinations, the Soma effects? regards pierson
